Floods Leave 75 Victims Displaced as Relief Centres Stay Open

KOTA KINABALU, March 13 — Floods in Sabah have left 75 people from 23 families displaced, with relief centres continuing to operate as authorities monitor the situation in affected areas across the state.

According to the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) secretariat, the number of evacuees remained unchanged as of 8am today, indicating that flood conditions in the affected districts have yet to fully improve.

Dozens of Villages Affected

Officials reported that 30 villages in the Paitan district are still affected by the floods. Rising water levels in surrounding areas forced several families to leave their homes and seek temporary shelter in designated evacuation centres.

Authorities have activated two temporary relief centres (PPS) to accommodate displaced residents. These centres are located at the Batagon Darat Community Centre and the Surau Nur Hikmah Kampung Kaindangan, where evacuees are receiving shelter, food, and basic necessities.

Authorities Continue Monitoring Situation

Disaster management officials said they are continuing to closely monitor weather patterns and flood conditions in the affected areas. Emergency teams remain on standby to respond quickly if water levels rise further or additional evacuations become necessary.

Local authorities are also coordinating assistance for flood victims, including providing essential supplies and ensuring that displaced residents remain safe while staying at the temporary relief centres.

Support for Flood Victims

Flood relief efforts involve cooperation between local government agencies, emergency responders, and community volunteers. Authorities emphasised that ensuring the safety and welfare of affected families remains the top priority as monitoring efforts continue.

Although the number of evacuees has stabilised, officials warned that residents in low-lying areas should remain vigilant as heavy rainfall and changing weather conditions could potentially worsen flooding in some regions.

Disaster management agencies will continue assessing the situation and providing updates as conditions evolve.
