US Military Refueling Plane Crashes in Western Iraq — Crew Fatalities and Rescue Operations Underway

Kuala Lumpur, — A United States military refueling aircraft has crashed in western Iraq during ongoing operations, prompting rescue efforts as officials continue to investigate the cause.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the aircraft, a Boeing KC‑135 Stratotanker, went down on March 12, 2026, over what U.S. forces described as friendly airspace in the region.

Details of the Incident

According to military statements, two aircraft were involved in the mission when one of the KC‑135 tankers crashed, while the second aircraft was able to land safely. Initial reports indicate that the crash was not caused by hostile fire or friendly fire, but the exact cause remains unclear as investigations continue.

The KC‑135 Stratotanker is a long‑range aerial refueling aircraft widely used by the U.S. Air Force to extend the flight time of combat and support aircraft.

Casualties and Recovery Efforts

CENTCOM later confirmed that four of the six crew members aboard the aircraft have been killed in the crash. Rescue operations to locate the remaining crew and the wreckage are ongoing. The identities of those killed have not yet been released, pending family notifications.

Conflicting Claim by Armed Group

Separately, a coalition of Iran‑aligned militia factions known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft, asserting that it targeted the plane to defend Iraqi airspace. However, U.S. military officials have denied evidence of hostile fire, and investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the crash.

Context of Regional Tensions

The incident occurred amid heightened military activity in the Middle East following the ongoing conflict involving U.S., Israeli, and Iranian forces. Multiple clashes, airstrikes, and aircraft losses have been reported in recent weeks as tensions escalate across the region.

As the situation develops, CENTCOM has said it will provide further updates on the cause of the crash and the status of rescue operations.
