70 Malaysian Pilgrims Safe After Fire Breaks Out at Mira Ajyad Hotel in Mecca

PUTRAJAYA, March 14 — Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that all Malaysian pilgrims staying at the Mira Ajyad Hotel in Mecca are safe after a fire broke out at the building on Thursday evening.

In a statement, the ministry said the Consulate General of Malaysia in Jeddah immediately coordinated with Saudi authorities as well as local Umrah travel agencies to confirm the safety of the pilgrims and assess the situation following the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that about 70 Malaysian pilgrims were staying at the hotel under several Malaysian travel agencies, including TH Travel, Zahafiz Travel, and Rayhar Travel. All agencies confirmed that their pilgrims were safe and accounted for.

Pilgrims Gathered Safely Outside Hotel

Officials from the Malaysian consulate conducted follow-up checks at approximately 7.20pm local time, where several Malaysian pilgrims were seen gathered safely near the hotel area while authorities assessed the situation.

For safety reasons, hotel guests were temporarily prevented from returning to their rooms while inspections were carried out by local authorities to determine the extent of the damage and ensure the building’s safety.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

Saudi authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Early assessments indicate no signs of sabotage or drone attacks, according to initial reports shared with Malaysian officials.

Hotel management and travel agencies are also preparing alternative accommodation arrangements for affected guests if authorities delay clearance for them to return to their rooms.

Malaysian Authorities Monitoring Situation

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said it will continue to closely monitor developments and remain in contact with Saudi authorities as well as the travel agencies responsible for the pilgrims.

Malaysians currently in Mecca have also been advised to stay calm and follow instructions issued by local authorities and their travel agencies while the investigation into the incident continues.

The ministry added that Malaysians requiring assistance can contact the Consulate General of Malaysia in Jeddah for consular support.
