Hue Sets Ambitious Goal to Become Vietnam’s Top Green Tourism City

HUẾ, Vietnam — The historic city of Huế is stepping up efforts to position itself as one of **Vietnam’s leading green tourism destinations, introducing a series of eco-friendly initiatives designed to promote sustainability while preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

Local authorities have outlined an ambitious strategy to transform tourism in the city by focusing on environmentally responsible practices, reducing pollution, and encouraging visitors to adopt sustainable travel habits. The initiative aims to create a tourism model that protects the environment while maintaining the economic benefits generated by the industry.

As part of the plan, tourism sites across the city are introducing waste-management systems, including improved recycling and waste-sorting facilities. Authorities also aim to ensure that major tourist attractions, beaches, and public areas are equipped with proper waste collection systems to maintain a cleaner environment.

The program also targets a significant reduction in plastic waste at heritage sites and tourist destinations. Officials have set a goal to cut the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic products by at least 30 percent, encouraging businesses and visitors to adopt greener alternatives.

Locations such as the Ru Cha mangrove forest, located near the Tam Giang Lagoon, have become symbols of the city’s green tourism push, attracting visitors with their pristine environment and biodiversity.

Local tourism businesses—including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators—are also being encouraged to adopt sustainable practices.
