Tragedy in Kendal River: Five UIN Walisongo Students Drown, One Still Missing

Central Java, El Sky News – Five students from Walisongo State Islamic University (UIN Walisongo) in Semarang were confirmed dead after being swept away during a river activity at the Singorojo River in Kendal Regency, Central Java.

According to local media reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, November 4, when six students participating in the Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) community service program engaged in tubing along the river.

Three victims — Riska Amelia, Sifa Nadilah, and M. Labib Rizki — were found earlier on the same day. The other two victims, Bima Pranawira and Muhammad Jibril Assyarifa from Gresik, were discovered on Wednesday morning around 9:30 a.m. local time near the initial incident site.

A joint SAR (Search and Rescue) team continues to search for another missing student, Nabila Yulian Desi, using two methods — manual riverbank searches and rubber boat patrols.

Rescue efforts have been challenging due to the difficult terrain and strong river currents, causing delays in evacuation. The tragedy has drawn public concern, as the victims were students involved in an academic field program.

University authorities are expected to review their field activity safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
