KPM Moves Swiftly to Restore Fire-Damaged Schools, Injects RM5 Million for Dormitory CCTV

PUTRAJAYA, El Sky News – The recent fire incidents affecting three educational institutions have shaken national consciousness, yet the rapid response from the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) has provided reassurance. KPM has pledged not only to expedite the restoration of the affected schools but also to enhance security by allocating an additional RM5 million for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems in selected dormitories.

Ensuring Safe Educational Infrastructure

The incidents involved Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Padang Melangit, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jalan Tiga Bangi, and Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi (SBPI) Sungai Lang, resulting in significant damage to classrooms, sports storage areas, and staff rooms. While no students were reported injured, these events have reignited concerns over school maintenance and facility safety.

KPM emphasized that their immediate priority is to ensure that students and staff can return to a safe and conducive learning environment as quickly as possible. The accelerated restoration process signals the ministry’s commitment to minimizing disruption to education caused by physical damage.

“Safety and well-being of every student and teacher are our utmost priorities. We will ensure repairs are completed promptly, and more importantly, we must take proactive steps to prevent such incidents from recurring,” stated a KPM insider.

CCTV: Investing in Discipline and Safety

As part of a broader initiative, KPM has injected an additional RM5 million for CCTV installation in strategic locations within school dormitories. This allocation supplements existing funds, reflecting the ministry’s seriousness in addressing safety issues, particularly bullying and misconduct that often occur beyond direct supervision.

The CCTV installation will focus on public areas such as corridors and common spaces, forming part of KPM’s strategy to:

  • Strengthen Discipline: CCTV acts as a deterrent against misconduct and vandalism.
  • Enhance Student Safety: Provides an additional monitoring layer to detect and respond quickly to emergencies or bullying incidents.

KPM has stressed that the project will consider student privacy. CCTV cameras will be positioned in strategic public areas rather than private spaces, balancing safety needs with students’ rights.

A Holistic Approach to Crisis Management

This dual initiative—swift restoration and safety enhancement through technology—reflects KPM’s holistic approach in managing infrastructure crises and maintaining discipline. The measures are expected to restore parental confidence in educational institutions and ensure that schools remain safe, healthy, and well-disciplined environments for future generations.
