Taiwan Detains Chinese Citizen Over Alleged Espionage Operation

Taipei, EL Sky News — Taiwan has arrested a Chinese national, identified only by the surname Ding, on suspicion of operating a spy network on behalf of the Chinese military. According to Taiwan’s Investigation Bureau, the suspect entered the island under the pretext of business or tourism before attempting to recruit contacts within the Taiwanese armed forces.

Investigators say Ding enlisted two retired Taiwanese military officers as the core of the network, with the objective of expanding the operation by targeting active-duty personnel. Authorities confirmed that seven individuals, including the suspect, have been detained in connection with the case. The Ministry of Defence stated that two serving officers have already been indicted for their involvement.

In an official statement, the ministry condemned the actions as a betrayal of national duty, stressing that even a small number of compromised personnel can threaten national security. The case has drawn attention because the suspected operative personally travelled to Taiwan, unlike previous incidents that relied largely on local intermediaries.

The arrest comes amid heightened efforts by Taipei to counter espionage activities believed to be linked to Beijing. Over the past year, several active and retired members of Taiwan’s military have faced prosecution for allegedly leaking sensitive information. Taiwanese authorities maintain that such cases reflect a sustained attempt by China to infiltrate and undermine the island’s defence establishment.
