Malaysia’s E-Commerce Sector Surges Toward RM1 Trillion, Recording Nine-Month Revenue High

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Malaysia’s e-commerce industry continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s digital economy, with revenue for the first nine months of 2025 nearing an unprecedented RM1 trillion milestone.

According to the latest data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), e-commerce revenue from January to September 2025 rose to RM937.5 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 1.9 percent. The strong performance underscores the resilience of the national economy while reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a leading digital player in the region.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted the sector’s accelerating significance in business expansion and competitiveness.

“E-commerce has successfully broadened market opportunities and directly enhanced Malaysia’s economic competitiveness in tandem with the rapid advancement of the global digital landscape,” he said.

Second Quarter Records Peak Performance

Data breakdown shows sustained momentum throughout the year, with the second quarter of 2025 charting the highest revenue at RM313.8 billion, before moderating slightly to RM312.6 billion in the third quarter.

Despite the marginal dip, the overall figures reflect the capability of Malaysian businesses — from SMEs to large enterprises — in leveraging digital platforms to engage and transact with consumers.

B2B Dominates While B2C Accelerates Rapidly

Growth was driven largely by Business-to-Business (B2B) transactions, which remained the dominant contributor. However, Business-to-Consumer (B2C) transactions recorded the sharpest increase, signalling a major behavioural shift among Malaysians, who are now more accustomed to online purchasing as part of everyday life.

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, together with e-commerce, accounted for 23.4 percent of the national economy in 2024 — a testament to the deep interconnection between digitalisation and Malaysia’s broader economic progress.

With revenue nearing RM1 trillion within just nine months, Malaysia is firmly on track to achieve its long-term target, with national e-commerce income projected to reach RM1.65 trillion by the end of 2025.

The milestone reflects the tangible impact of ongoing digital transformation efforts, supported by strengthened communications infrastructure and expanding 5G coverage — positioning Malaysia among the fastest-growing digital economies in Southeast Asia.
