Six Dead, Including Toddler, in Targeted Mass Shooting at Ecuador Tourist Resort

PUERTO LOPEZ, El Sky News – A wave of violence has once again struck Ecuador’s coastline after a group of gunmen opened fire at a popular beach promenade in Puerto Lopez on Sunday, leaving six people dead. Among the victims was a two-year-old girl, marking a tragic escalation in the country’s ongoing struggle with organized crime.

The Attack

According to local law enforcement, the massacre unfolded when several armed assailants arrived at the tourist hotspot using a van and two motorcycles. The gunmen launched a rapid, indiscriminate attack on civilians before fleeing the scene.

Local emergency services confirmed the following casualties:

  • Fatalities: 6 individuals (including a 2-year-old female toddler).
  • Injuries: 3 people sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Investigation and Motive

The Ecuadorian National Police have launched a massive manhunt to locate the suspects. Initial investigations suggest the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather a fallout from internal conflicts between rival organized crime syndicates.

“This is the third fatal incident in Puerto Lopez within a single weekend,” a police spokesperson stated, noting that the total death toll in the town has risen to nine over the last 48 hours.

National Security Crisis

The incident places renewed pressure on President Daniel Noboa, who has implemented strict security measures and declared a “state of war” against drug cartels earlier this year. Despite increased military presence, security analysts warn that gangs continue to target public spaces to exert control over lucrative coastal trafficking routes.

Impact on Tourism

Puerto Lopez, located in the Manabi province, is globally recognized for its marine ecotourism and whale-watching attractions. However, the viral footage of panicked tourists fleeing the gunfire has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of the nation’s travel industry. Authorities have since deployed additional security units to patrol major beaches and tourist hubs.
