The ‘Flexi-Degree’ Revolution: Malaysian Public Universities Introduce Full Hybrid Mode for Final-Year Social Science Students

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA, El Sky News – In a significant move to enhance graduate employability and adapt to the post-pandemic digital economy, several Malaysian Public Universities (UA) officially launched the ‘Ijazah Fleksi’ (Flexible Degree) Program today, Friday, January 9, 2026. This initiative allows final-year students in Social Science courses to transition to a full hybrid learning mode, enabling them to begin their professional careers while simultaneously completing their remaining academic credits from home.

The rollout aligns with the newly launched Malaysia Higher Education Plan (PPTM) 2026–2035, which emphasizes “flexible pathways” and “industry-ready graduates” as core pillars of the national academic reform.

A Modern Approach to ‘Earn While You Learn’ The program is professionally designed to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom learning and real-world workplace experience.

  • Hybrid Flexibility: Final-year students can attend lectures virtually and access course materials through enhanced digital platforms like DELIMa 2.0, eliminating the need for a daily physical presence on campus.
  • Professional Integration: By working while studying, students can gain immediate industry experience, making them highly competitive in the job market upon formal graduation.
  • Supportive Supervision: Faculty members provide “friendly and flexible” consultation hours, often conducted via video conferencing, to support students who are balancing full-time work commitments with their academic responsibilities.

Why Social Sciences First? The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has strategically selected Social Science disciplines—such as Communications, Sociology, and Psychology—for the initial phase.

  • Sector Readiness: Industries related to social sciences have shown a high professional readiness for remote and hybrid work models.
  • Skill Application: Students can immediately apply skills like social research, public relations, and human resource management directly into their professional roles.
  • Future Scaling: Following this professional pilot phase, the ministry plans to evaluate extending the hybrid model to other suitable disciplines by the end of 2026.

A Professional Win for Students and Industry Academic experts have lauded the move as a “friendly and pragmatic” evolution of the Malaysian university system. “We are no longer bound by the four walls of a lecture hall,” a university vice-chancellor noted during the launch. “This is about giving our students the professional autonomy to build their careers early without compromising their academic integrity.”

Industry leaders also welcome the move, noting that it allows companies to identify and nurture young talent earlier. For many students, this professional flexibility provides a much-needed “friendly financial cushion,” helping them manage living costs by securing an income before they even receive their scrolls.

Looking Ahead As Malaysia moves into the first quarter of 2026, the Ijazah Fleksi program serves as a professional benchmark for the region. By reimagining the traditional final-year experience, Malaysia is fostering a new generation of “adaptive learners” who are ready to lead in a globalized, digital-first professional arena.
