Microsoft Issues Urgent Patch for Windows 11 “Shutdown Loop” Bug

KUALA LUMPUR – Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band update to address a critical flaw in Windows 11 that prevents computers from shutting down. The glitch, which surfaced following the January 2026 security rollout, has left many users frustrated as their devices automatically reboot instead of powering off.

The “Ghost Reboot” Glitch

The primary issue involves a conflict within the system’s power management. According to technical reports, users attempting to perform a standard “Shut Down” or initiate “Hibernate” mode found their systems performing an unprompted restart.

Data suggests the bug specifically targets Windows 11 version 23H2 devices that have Secure Launch enabled. This security feature, designed to protect the kernel during boot-up, appears to be triggering an accidental reset command when the January security configurations are present.

Comprehensive Fixes

Beyond the shutdown loop, this emergency patch serves as a cumulative fix for several other performance bottlenecks reported earlier this month:

  • Outlook Stability: A fix for Outlook Classic, which had been crashing unexpectedly for enterprise users.
  • Remote Connectivity: Resolving authentication failures for users attempting remote logins on both Windows 10 and 11.
  • Display Errors: Addressing “Black Screen” bugs where the monitor fails to render the desktop environment after a login attempt.

Immediate Action Required

Cybersecurity experts and Microsoft engineers are urging all Windows 11 users—particularly those in corporate environments—to run Windows Update manually.

“While not a security vulnerability in the traditional sense, the inability to power down hardware can lead to premature battery wear and increased energy consumption,” noted a tech analyst. “The emergency patch is designed to restore system stability immediately.”
