KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News — A quiet mountain community was shattered on Tuesday after a rare mass shooting at a secondary school left 10 people dead, including a female suspect. The incident, which took place in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, now stands as one of the most devastating acts of violence in modern Canadian history.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of an active shooter at the local high school. Upon securing the building, officers discovered a grim scene. According to official police statements, six individuals were found dead inside the school premises. A seventh victim succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to a nearby medical facility.
The investigation quickly expanded beyond the school grounds. Two additional victims were discovered at a residential property nearby, which investigators believe is directly connected to the shooter.
In addition to the fatalities, medical authorities confirmed that at least 27 other individuals were treated for injuries. While two remain in serious condition, 25 others suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
The shooter, identified by police as a woman with brown hair, was found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The RCMP has since lifted the lockdown orders for the town’s 2,400 residents, assuring the public that there is no further threat to the community.
Criminologists noted that the gender of the suspect makes this case particularly unusual, as female perpetrators are exceptionally rare in North American mass shooting events.
The massacre has sent shockwaves across Canada, drawing immediate condemnation and messages of grief from the highest levels of government. Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement via X (formerly Twitter), extending his deepest sympathies to the families affected and labeling the event “deeply tragic.”
With a death toll of 10, this attack joins the ranks of Canada’s deadliest mass killings, alongside the 2020 Nova Scotia rampage and the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre. As the town of Tumbler Ridge begins a long process of mourning, federal investigators are working to determine a motive behind the senseless violence.
