KUALA LUMPUR – The remarkable journey of Norcy Beauty Lab, a homegrown cosmetic venture that transitioned from a small-scale startup to a multi-million ringgit enterprise, is being hailed as a blueprint for success for entrepreneurs in Sabah.
During a recent visit to the company’s manufacturing facility in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah’s Deputy Chief Minister III, Datuk Ewon Benedick, lauded the firm’s ability to compete on a national stage. He emphasized that the brand’s trajectory serves as a testament to the “Sabah First” vision, which encourages local businesses to expand their horizons beyond regional borders.
From Matunggong to National Prominence
The business, founded by Sabahan entrepreneur Norsiah Ahiddin, traces its roots back to the Matunggong Entrepreneurship Centre. What began as a modest operation has now evolved into a powerhouse with a presence in Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei.
Currently, the company manages two major facilities:
- An expanded factory located in its hometown of Matunggong, Sabah.
- A dedicated Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) factory in Nilai, which serves the broader Malaysian market.
With a dedicated workforce of 15 employees, Norcy Beauty Lab now generates an annual revenue nearing RM10 million, marking it as one of the most successful Sabah-owned businesses in the beauty industry.
Government Support and Future Growth
Datuk Ewon, who also serves as the Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, noted that the government has played a pivotal role in this growth. Last year, through SME Corp, the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) provided a grant to facilitate the company’s expansion.
“This is the true spirit of Sabah First—not only striving on our own soil but having the courage to compete and expand beyond Sabah,” Ewon stated. He reiterated that his ministry (MINDET) remains committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and support to help entrepreneurs like Norsiah elevate their product standards to meet international quality.
Empowering Local Talents
The success of Norcy Beauty Lab is more than just a financial milestone; it is a catalyst for job creation and skill development for Sabahans. By establishing sustainable income streams for local workers and inspiring other business owners to innovate, the company aligns with the state’s goal of economic self-sufficiency.
As Norcy Beauty Lab continues to grow, it stands as a reminder that with strategic support and entrepreneurial grit, local brands can successfully bridge the gap between rural beginnings and national market leadership.
