Over 26,000 Parents Apply for Early Year One Entry as Malaysia Opens School Registration for 6‑Year‑Olds

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17, 2026 — Malaysian parents have shown strong interest in early primary education, with more than 26,000 applications submitted for six‑year‑old children wishing to enter Year One early for the 2027 academic session.

According to the Director‑General of Education, Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, the Ministry of Education has received a total of 26,229 applications from parents registering children born in 2021 — who will be six years old in 2027 — as part of the new optional early Year One entry policy.

In addition, the ministry reported over 165,000 applications for seven‑year‑old students who will automatically register for Year One in the 2027 academic session. These figures show a strong overall response since online registration opened on February 15, 2026, under the Ministry’s integrated education registration system.

The early Year One entry initiative, introduced as part of Malaysia’s national education policy reforms, enables parents to enrol their children in primary school at age six if they feel their child is ready for formal education. This policy is intended to give families greater flexibility while ensuring that children’s developmental readiness remains a priority.

Education officials have reassured parents that registrations will not be rejected due to age alone, and that placement decisions will take into account individual preparedness and school capacity. Parents who miss the online registration deadline can submit manual applications from April 1 to November 15, provided the child is deemed ready for school.

Placement coordination will be managed by district education offices from September 1 to 30, with appeal options available for cases such as changes in residence or requests to have siblings placed in the same school.

Officials also encourage parents who are uncertain about their child’s readiness to consult professional guidance from schools, district education offices, or the state education department. This support ensures that each family can make the most appropriate choice for their child’s educational journey.

Registration for Year One entry remains open online until March 31, 2026, through the Ministry of Education Integrated System (MOEIS) portal, allowing parents time to complete the process at their convenience.
