Man Loses Leg in CNY Fireworks Mishap

KUALA LUMPUR – What was meant to be a vibrant Chinese New Year celebration turned into a life-altering tragedy when a man suffered a severed limb following a fireworks explosion in Bukit Siput early Tuesday morning.

The victim, a local resident in his 30s, was reportedly celebrating the festive season in front of his home at Taman Damai Jaya when the incident occurred.

According to Segamat District Police Chief, Supt Mohd Jumazanzahir Chek Ismail, the emergency was reported at approximately 12:30 AM on February 17, 2026. Preliminary reports suggest the victim was handling a high-powered pyrotechnic device identified as a “Shoot Cake 4(D) 16 Shot (Premium).”

Witness accounts and initial findings indicate that the device exploded prematurely or unexpectedly while the victim was in close proximity. The force of the blast resulted in a catastrophic injury, with medical professionals later confirming that the victim’s left leg was severed below the knee.

Following the blast, the victim was rushed to Segamat Hospital. As of the latest update, he is being treated in the hospital’s “Red Zone” (Critical Care). While the physical trauma is severe, authorities have confirmed that his current condition is stable.

On the legal front, the police have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mishap. The case is being scrutinized under:

  • Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957: Pertaining to the illegal possession or use of specific explosives.
  • Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957: Relating to the causing of hurt or endangerment through the use of explosives.

In the wake of this tragedy, Supt Mohd Jumazanzahir issued a strong reminder to the community regarding the dangers of festive pyrotechnics.

“We urge the public to exercise extreme caution. Only fireworks that have been legally permitted by the authorities should be used, and even then, they must be discharged in open areas away from crowds or residential structures,” he stated.

Authorities continue to emphasize that safety protocols—such as maintaining a safe distance and ensuring the ground is level before lighting—are not optional, but essential to preventing permanent injury or death.
