Telegram Blocks Nearly 190,000 Channels and Groups in Massive Cleanup Drive

KUALA LUMPUR – The instant messaging giant Telegram has significantly intensified its moderation efforts, blocking over 187,000 groups and channels on Monday alone. This move marks one of the highest daily enforcement actions recorded in recent weeks, according to a statistical analysis by Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

The specific count of 187,634 blocked entities represents the fourth-highest figure for February 2026, trailing only behind peak enforcement dates on January 22-23 and February 15.

Aggressive Moderation in 2026

Data indicates that Telegram’s crackdown on problematic content has reached unprecedented levels this year. Since February 1, the platform has deactivated a total of 2.04 million groups and channels. Of these, 7,116 were specifically identified as being linked to terrorism.

Looking at the broader picture for 2026, the cumulative number of blocked entities has surged to nearly 7.5 million, with 27,382 of those being terrorism-related channels.

AI-Powered Enforcement

The surge in moderation efficiency is attributed to Telegram’s evolving security infrastructure. Since early 2024, the platform has integrated advanced AI-powered moderation tools to supplement its traditional methods, which include:

  • User Reports: Direct flagging of content by the community.
  • Proactive Monitoring: Machine learning algorithms that scan for violations.
  • AI Integration: Enhanced automation to identify and remove harmful content at scale.

Founded in 2013 by Pavel Durov, Telegram has grown into a global communication powerhouse with over one billion monthly active users. This latest enforcement drive underscores the platform’s commitment to maintaining user safety while managing its vast scale of communication.
