Kuala Lumpur – Manchester United are on the verge of securing a return to the UEFA Champions League next season after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford last night.
Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko in the first half gave the Red Devils a comfortable lead, although Brentford pulled one back late through Mathias Jensen. The win lifts United into third place with 61 points, 11 points ahead of sixth-placed Brighton, with four matches still to play. The top five teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League. This marks the first time since the 2023/24 season that United are firmly on track for Europe’s elite competition.
The game started at a high tempo. United dominated from the opening minutes. Kobbie Mainoo produced a brilliant piece of skill before feeding Amad, whose shot was blocked. Shortly after, Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher had to make a sharp save from Harry Maguire’s header.
United broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Maguire won another aerial duel from a corner, and Casemiro stole in at the back post to nod the ball home from a tight angle. The second goal arrived in the 43rd minute through a lightning counter-attack. Bruno Fernandes delivered a pinpoint pass to Benjamin Sesko, who raced clear and powered a clinical header past the keeper.
The second half was more tense. Brentford pushed forward in search of a way back, but Igor Thiago squandered several good opportunities. In the 87th minute, Mathias Jensen unleashed a stunning long-range strike that set nerves jangling at Old Trafford. However, United held firm until the final whistle.
With this result, United now sit 12 points behind Arsenal and nine behind Manchester City. Their next big test comes against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Match-winner Benjamin Sesko said: “We have to keep pushing until the last minute. It was important to bring this energy today. We believe we can do it.” He added that the game was difficult but United fully deserved the victory.
This win has reignited hope among United fans who have been waiting for a return to the Champions League.
