KUALA LUMPUR,MAY, 2026 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong commitment to enhancing regional cooperation through the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), describing the regional bloc as an important platform for narrowing development gaps and boosting economic prosperity across Southeast Asia.
Speaking during the BIMP-EAGA Special Summit held in Cebu, Philippines, Anwar stressed that stronger cooperation among member countries is essential to ensure sustainable growth, improve regional connectivity, and strengthen long-term economic resilience amid global uncertainty.
The summit brought together leaders from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to discuss regional development strategies, investment opportunities, infrastructure connectivity, and food security initiatives.
Anwar Highlights Importance of BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035
According to Anwar, the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 should not be viewed merely as a policy framework, but as a shared commitment to building a more resilient, competitive, and people-centered region.
He stated that the initiative must continue to focus on ensuring that rural, remote, and underdeveloped regions are not left behind in the region’s economic progress.
The Malaysian Prime Minister emphasized that inclusive development remains one of the most important priorities for ASEAN member nations, particularly as many rural communities still face limited access to infrastructure, investment opportunities, and technological advancement.
Anwar added that stronger regional cooperation would allow member countries to better respond to global economic instability and future geopolitical challenges.
Malaysia Pushes Renewable Energy and Cross-Border Connectivity
One of the key issues highlighted during the summit was regional energy cooperation.
Anwar stated that Malaysia supports stronger cross-border energy connectivity and increased investments in renewable energy projects, including solar power systems and mini-grid infrastructure.
He noted that regional collaboration in sustainable energy is becoming increasingly important as countries face rising concerns over climate change, energy supply disruptions, and global market volatility.
Malaysia also encouraged ASEAN countries to adopt a more integrated and bold approach in developing long-term energy security strategies across the region.
Analysts believe renewable energy cooperation could become one of the most important pillars of future ASEAN economic integration.
Focus on Trade, Investment, and Food Security
Apart from energy cooperation, discussions at the summit also focused heavily on expanding trade opportunities and strengthening food security among member nations.
Anwar stressed that deeper economic integration within BIMP-EAGA could help improve investment flows, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in less developed areas across the region.
Food security was also identified as a growing regional concern, particularly as climate change and global supply chain disruptions continue affecting agricultural production and food distribution worldwide.
Leaders at the summit agreed that stronger collaboration in agriculture, logistics, and infrastructure development will be necessary to ensure long-term regional stability.
BIMP-EAGA Continues to Play Strategic Role in ASEAN Development
BIMP-EAGA was established in 1994 to accelerate economic development in less developed and geographically remote areas within Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
The cooperation framework covers a vast region that includes Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Mindanao, Palawan, and Brunei Darussalam.
Over the years, the initiative has focused on improving transport connectivity, trade facilitation, tourism, energy development, agriculture, and private sector participation.
Regional leaders believe BIMP-EAGA continues to play a vital role in reducing development inequality and improving economic integration within ASEAN.
ASEAN Leaders Stress Unity Amid Global Challenges
The summit also took place amid growing global economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and concerns over international supply chains.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that ASEAN member countries must remain united and continue strengthening regional cooperation to ensure sustainable economic progress for future generations.
Leaders highlighted the importance of translating regional visions into practical action plans that directly benefit local communities through job creation, improved connectivity, and economic expansion.
Anwar similarly stressed that ASEAN unity and regional cooperation remain critical in maintaining stability and prosperity across Southeast Asia.
Malaysia Expands Regional Diplomacy During ASEAN Summit
Besides attending the BIMP-EAGA summit, Anwar also participated in several bilateral meetings with regional leaders during the broader ASEAN Summit activities in Cebu.
Discussions reportedly included renewable energy cooperation, trade expansion, economic resilience, and strategic regional projects involving ASEAN member countries.
Malaysia’s active participation reflects the country’s broader diplomatic strategy of strengthening ASEAN centrality while promoting economic integration and regional stability.
Malaysia’s renewed commitment toward BIMP-EAGA signals the country’s continued focus on regional development, economic inclusivity, and sustainable cooperation across Southeast Asia.
As ASEAN countries continue facing global economic pressures, climate-related challenges, and supply chain uncertainties, regional initiatives such as BIMP-EAGA are expected to become increasingly important in driving long-term stability and shared prosperity
