Kuala Lumpur, El Sky News — American singer Brook Lynn, also known as Brittany Porter, has filed for divorce after revealing that she was unaware she had legally married former Malaysian King, Sultan Muhammad V, during a ceremony held in Oman in April 2024.
The case has sparked international attention after Brook Lynn disclosed that what she believed to be a symbolic ceremony was, in fact, a legally binding Islamic marriage. She stated that she was never fully informed about the legal and religious implications of the nikah (Islamic marriage contract), which automatically bound her to Sultan Muhammad V.
In an exclusive interview with international media, Brook Lynn said:
“I never intended to get legally married. I thought it was just a symbolic ritual, but it turned out to be a valid and binding marriage under Islamic law.”
Sultan Muhammad V, who abdicated the throne in 2021, has been known for his private life and relationships with public figures and celebrities. This marriage came as a surprise, especially given that the ceremony was held in secrecy in Oman.
Brook Lynn’s legal team revealed that she is seeking a divorce through Malaysia’s Syariah courts, despite the marriage having taken place abroad. The case presents complex jurisdictional challenges, especially considering the former king’s unique legal status and immunities.
The case has also ignited public discussion about the importance of transparency in marriages involving religious and customary laws, particularly when non-Muslims are involved in Islamic marriages. So far, Sultan Muhammad V has not made an official statement regarding the divorce petition. Legal experts in Malaysia predict that the divorce proceedings could be prolonged due to the intricate legal and royal protocols involved
