Sabah, El Sky News — Barisan Nasional (BN) has announced that it will hold discussions with the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) leadership following the conclusion of the 17th Sabah State Election. The coalition aims to address any uncertainties regarding MIC’s role within BN.
Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, BN’s Deputy Chairman, said he intends to meet with MIC’s senior leaders personally to clarify issues and maintain the long-standing relationship between the party and the coalition. “The dialogue will ensure that any confusion is resolved through discussion, and the decades-long friendship between BN and MIC remains intact,” he said.
The discussions come after MIC delegates at the party’s 79th Annual General Meeting supported a motion to exit BN. However, the delegates deferred the final decision to the party president and Central Working Committee, allowing the leadership to determine the timing and approach of any exit.
BN Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized that the coalition respects MIC’s internal decision-making process and will not interfere with the party’s deliberations. The coalition has also prioritized focusing on the ongoing Sabah election, with further talks on MIC’s position planned only after the polls conclude.
The outcome of these discussions will determine whether MIC remains part of BN or pursues an independent path, highlighting the delicate dynamics within Malaysia’s multi-party coalition.
