KomDigi Indonesia Issues Warning: ChatGPT and 24 Other Foreign Platforms Risk Being Blocked!

JAKARTA, El Sky News – Leading artificial intelligence (AI) platform ChatGPT by OpenAI is now facing the possibility of being blocked in Indonesia. This comes after a stern warning issued by Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (KomDigi) to dozens of foreign digital service providers (PSE) that have failed to comply with local registration regulations.

PSE Registration: The Main Issue

KomDigi reportedly sent warning letters to 25 foreign PSE providers, covering a range of major global digital platforms. Besides OpenAI (owner of ChatGPT), other major companies such as Cloudflare, Duolingo, and Dropbox were also named in the notice.

The main issue raised is that these companies have not registered their electronic systems in accordance with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics Regulation Number 5 of 2020 (Permenkominfo No. 5/2020).

Digital Sovereignty Takes Center Stage

This registration requirement is not merely administrative; the Indonesian government views it as a critical step in upholding the country’s digital sovereignty. Registration allows authorities to monitor the operations of digital platforms more effectively and ensure better protection of Indonesian users’ data and rights.

A KomDigi spokesperson emphasized that the regulation must be followed by all companies—domestic or international—that provide services within Indonesia.

Possible Consequences: Access Restrictions

If the 25 warned PSE providers fail to comply with the registration rules after the notification period ends, KomDigi stated that it will not hesitate to impose the strictest administrative sanction: service access termination, commonly referred to as blocking.

For now, ChatGPT and the other affected platforms remain accessible to users in Indonesia. However, the registration deadline is critical. KomDigi is reportedly awaiting prompt responses from these companies to prevent any service disruptions.

Conclusion

This situation highlights Indonesia’s firm stance in enforcing its digital laws, increasing pressure on global tech giants to comply with local regulations to ensure uninterrupted operations within the country.
