Addis Ababa, El Sky News — Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to deepen and accelerate economic cooperation, investment opportunities, and business relations with Ethiopia during the Malaysia–Ethiopia High-Level Business Forum held today in Addis Ababa.
In his keynote speech, Anwar highlighted Ethiopia as a symbol of “historic openness”, noting that its legacy of welcoming early Muslim migrants should be an inspiration for building modern economic partnerships based on trust, inclusivity, and mutual benefit.
“Economic cooperation is not merely about figures and contracts it is a platform to strengthen empathy, trust, and shared prosperity,” said Anwar.
Strategic Opportunities & Priority Sectors
Anwar emphasised several strategic sectors where both countries can develop stronger bilateral collaboration, including:
- Digital technology
- Renewable energy
- Modern agriculture
- Green investment and sustainability
He also stated that investment processes must be streamlined between government agencies and private sectors from both nations, ensuring faster implementation and clear pathways for cooperation.
In a separate meeting with Ethiopian President Taye Atske-Selassie Amde, both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in high-impact sectors such as semiconductors, halal ecosystem development, and cybersecurity signaling a shift from traditional trade relations to strategic partnerships.
The reopening of the Malaysian Embassy in Addis Ababa was cited as proof of Ethiopia’s growing significance in Malaysia’s economic and diplomatic strategy.
Trade Figures & Business Participation
The business forum gathered around 200 representatives, including 54 Ethiopian entities and over 70 Malaysian companies from the manufacturing, service, and government-linked sectors.
Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Ethiopia has now reached RM 625.6 million, marking an increase of nearly 50% compared to the previous year, signaling strong economic potential.
Anwar confirmed that detailed economic discussions will follow with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, with the aim of translating commitments into immediate and practical action.
Symbolic Diplomacy & Future Outlook
This official visit also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Ethiopia, established in January 1965. Anwar described the visit as “more than ceremonial” it represents a renewed commitment to people-centric diplomacy, sustainable development, and ethical economic growth.
With ongoing discussions on technology transfers, renewable energy collaboration, and modern agricultural initiatives, both nations are expected to enter a new era of long-term strategic cooperation.
