Traffic Chaos at the Malaysia–Singapore Checkpoints Following Tighter Immigration Rules

Kuala Lumpur, El Sky News – Heavy traffic congestion has been reported at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) after the implementation of stricter immigration procedures at motorcycle lanes. The new measures have resulted in slower manual inspections and prolonged tailbacks during peak hours.

According to immigration authorities, manual passport checks now require over 30 seconds per individual, particularly when officers need to scan multiple passports simultaneously. The extended processing time has caused queues to build rapidly, affecting thousands of daily commuters.

Johor Infrastructure and Transport Executive Councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said motorcyclists were the most affected group, as many rely on the two checkpoints for daily cross-border travel. He encouraged riders to adopt MyNIISe or MyBorderPass, which are expected to reduce congestion by facilitating faster clearance.

The tightened checks follow recent reports indicating that 26 Malaysian citizens had managed to cross the border without their passports, prompting heightened scrutiny at both checkpoints.

The congestion has led to renewed calls from users for the expansion of automated clearance lanes, with many noting that the current manual system is no longer adequate to handle the high volume of travellers.
