China Launches Two-Year Commercial Trial of Satellite-Based IoT Services

Wuhan, El Sky News – China has officially begun a two-year commercial trial of satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) services, marking a significant milestone in its ambition to become a global leader in space-based communication technology. The trial was announced during the 2025 China 5G + Industrial Internet Conference in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

Purpose of the Trial

The trial aims to develop scalable and replicable satellite-IoT service models, strengthen security and regulatory frameworks for satellite communications, and support the growth of China’s low-altitude economy, which includes drones and autonomous aerial vehicles. The initiative also seeks to diversify the commercial satellite communication market. Only companies meeting regulatory requirements are eligible to participate.

Applications and Potential Use

The satellite-IoT system will provide connectivity across land, sea, and air. In maritime sectors, it can enable real-time monitoring of fishing vessels and offshore operations. In logistics and transportation, it can track shipments and vehicles in remote areas. The energy and water sectors can benefit from remote monitoring of infrastructure in isolated regions. Additionally, the system can provide backup communication in emergencies when ground networks fail, support drones and aerial vehicles for low-altitude operations, and enhance industrial IoT by connecting remote sensors and automated equipment.

Policy and Regulatory Background

In August 2025, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued guidelines to open the commercial satellite communication market and encourage private-sector participation. Satellite communications are now considered part of China’s new digital infrastructure”, alongside 5G, AI, cloud computing, and industrial automation. The trial is designed not only to test technical feasibility but also to establish regulatory standards for security and operational reliability.

Strategic Implications

Experts say that the successful implementation of satellite-IoT services could position China as a global leader in space-based digital connectivity. Potential impacts include technological leadership in next-generation satellite communications, enhanced efficiency in logistics, energy, and industrial operations, and growth opportunities in the low-altitude economy. The initiative may also set global benchmarks for commercial satellite IoT services, providing a model for other countries. The launch of China’s commercial satellite-IoT trial represents a crucial step toward a fully integrated digital ecosystem. Over the next two years, the world will watch how this initiative influences global connectivity, industrial automation, and the commercial space industry.
