PM Announces E-Invoice Exemption Threshold Raised to RM1 Million, Easing Burden on SMEs Starting 2026

KOTA KINABALU, El Sky News – In an announcement expected to bring significant relief to thousands of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide, the Malaysian Government has agreed to raise the e-Invoice exemption threshold from the original amount of RM500,000 to RM1 million in annual income.

Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while delivering this crucial news, confirmed that the decision will take full effect on January 1, 2026. This proactive measure is seen as a reflection of the MADANI Government’s concern for the challenges faced by small businesses in adapting to the new tax digitalization ecosystem.

Target Emphasized: Reducing Pressure on MSMEs

Since the introduction of the e-Invoice mandate, the Government has adopted a cautious approach, especially towards MSMEs, which often face resource and financial constraints in implementing new systems. The increase in the exemption threshold to RM1 million directly means that companies with annual sales below this level are now excluded from the mandatory e-Invoice obligation.

“The initial threshold of RM500,000 has been raised to RM1 million. This means that small companies will no longer need to implement e-invoicing for the time being. This decision was made after taking into account in-depth feedback from the business community,” said the Prime Minister.

This step is viewed as a much-needed adjustment, providing a longer timeframe and breathing room for micro and small traders to focus on business operations without being burdened by the cost and complexity of preparing the e-Invoice system.

Flexibility for Smoother Digitalization

Although e-Invoicing is a critical initiative to modernize the country’s tax administration, the government is showing a willingness to be flexible. By raising this threshold, Malaysia is working to ensure that the transition to the digital system is inclusive and gradual, where larger businesses (with annual revenue exceeding RM1 million) will lead the implementation, while the MSME segment is given protection.

This latest initiative reinforces the Government’s commitment to the Malaysia MADANI principles, where economic development goes hand-in-hand with the welfare of the people and businesses, especially those on a smaller scale. It ensures that the country’s digital transformation journey can continue without sacrificing the competitiveness and survival of small traders.
