KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the President of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), has issued a robust denial against accusations that he misappropriated party funds and stored the money at his private residence. The severe allegations were reportedly made by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a viral video clip, which Muhyiddin immediately rejected as “wild and baseless conjecture.” He asserted that such an incident has never taken place throughout his tenure in the party’s leadership and administration.
Addressing the issue, Muhyiddin clarified the party’s financial processes, emphasizing that the claims were wholly unfounded. He explained that all financial contributions and donations received by Bersatu are properly channeled into the official party account, which is then managed with complete transparency by the party’s Secretary-General (Treasurer). He suggested that Dr Mahathir, who he still regards as an elder statesman, might have been misled by incorrect information from unreliable and irresponsible parties, which led to the public accusation.
The controversy arose from a two-minute video that circulated widely, reportedly showing Dr Mahathir accusing Muhyiddin during a gathering with the Johor Bersatu Youth Wing (Armada). The video was also accompanied by a caption that alleged Muhyiddin’s desire to become Prime Minister was driven by a fear of imprisonment, rather than a genuine desire to serve. Muhyiddin expressed his disappointment, noting that in his many previous meetings with Dr Mahathir, the matter of party funds was never raised. He stressed that as a statesman, Dr Mahathir should have first sought clarification from him before making any public statement.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, Muhyiddin affirmed his continued respect for Dr Mahathir. He highlighted their previously close working relationship and his support for Dr Mahathir’s efforts to promote Malay unity. Consequently, Muhyiddin concluded his statement by declaring that he has no intention of initiating legal proceedings against Dr Mahathir over the matter, choosing instead to use this opportunity to clarify the situation and prevent the spread of slander against his name.
