EC Finalizing Schedule for Kinabatangan, Lamag By-Elections

PUTRAJAYA, El Sky News – The Election Commission (EC) of Malaysia convened a special meeting today, December 16, 2025, to determine the critical dates and operational details for the upcoming by-elections (B.E.) in Sabah for the Kinabatangan Parliamentary (P.187) and Lamag State (N.58) seats.

The Special Meeting in Session

The meeting commenced at 10:00 AM at the EC Tower in Putrajaya. It is chaired by the EC Chairman, Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, and attended by Deputy Chairman Dr Azmi Sharom and Secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus.

The primary objective of this session is to establish key electoral milestones, including:

  • The date for the Writ of Election.
  • The Nomination Day for candidates.
  • The Polling Day (actual voting date).
  • Confirmation of the electoral roll that will be utilized.
  • Logistical preparation for the polls.

Mandate to Fill the Vacancy

The necessity for these by-elections arose following the passing of the incumbent representative for both seats, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, on December 5.

The EC initiated this process after receiving official notification of the casual vacancies from both the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and the Speaker of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly.

In accordance with constitutional provisions, namely Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution and Article 21(5) of the Sabah State Constitution, the vacant seats must be filled within a period of 60 days from the date the EC verifies the vacancy.

Expected Announcement

The EC is scheduled to hold a press conference immediately upon the conclusion of the special meeting to officially announce the finalized dates and all other pertinent details concerning the Kinabatangan and Lamag by-elections.
