Mersing Hit by Early Season Floods: 30 Victims Evacuated to Relief Centre

MERSING, El Sky News – The district of Mersing, Johor is currently facing an early-season flood situation after being hit by non-stop heavy rain since last night, causing river water and runoff from the hills to inundate low-lying residential areas.

Following the sudden rise in water levels, the Johor State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) has activated a Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) to accommodate the affected victims.

The Johor State Secretary, who is also the JPBN Chairman, Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman, confirmed that as of 7:00 AM this morning, 30 residents representing 10 families have been evacuated.

“Immediate action has been taken to evacuate the affected victims in two high-risk areas. They consist of residents from Kampung Baru Air Tawar and Kampung Hubong,” he said in a statement released this morning.

Datuk Asman Shah also informed that the PPS was officially opened at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Air Tawar (Pusat Air Tawar National School) at 7:00 AM.

The JPBN advises residents in low-lying areas and riverbanks in Mersing to remain vigilant, obey authorities’ instructions, and evacuate immediately if the water level continues to rise.

The public is also reminded to prioritize their safety and that of their families, and to avoid activities in fast-flowing water areas or areas that are already flooded. The authorities will continue to monitor the weather situation and water levels throughout the district.
