KOTA KINABALU, El Sky News – Sabah UMNO has officially identified four potential candidates to contest the upcoming Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections. This move follows the recent vacancy of both seats after the passing of veteran leader Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
The Search for “Winnable” Faces
Sabah UMNO Chairman, Datuk Jafry Ariffin, confirmed that the shortlisted individuals consist of fresh male faces. The selection process prioritized “winnability,” with names being vetted based on extensive feedback from grassroots leadership within the Kinabatangan division.
“We have identified four potential candidates who meet the criteria of being ‘winnable’ and acceptable to the local community,” Jafry stated during a press conference. He emphasized that the party is focused on revitalizing its image while maintaining its influence in the region.
Key Election Dates
The Election Commission (EC) has previously announced the timeline for the twin by-elections:
- Nomination Day: January 10, 2026
- Early Voting: January 20, 2026
- Polling Day: January 24, 2026
Strategic Defense of Barisan Nasional Strongholds
The upcoming polls are seen as a critical test for Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah. During the previous state election (PRN), the majority in the Lamag seat saw a significant decline. Jafry noted that the party has analyzed past performances and is determined to defend both seats with a more robust campaign strategy.
The vacancies arose following the death of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on December 5, 2025. Bung Moktar was a central figure in Sabah politics, serving as both the Member of Parliament for Kinabatangan and the State Assemblyman for Lamag.
Leadership Reshuffle
In addition to the candidate announcement, Sabah UMNO also revealed its updated leadership lineup. Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Salleh Said Keruak remains as Treasurer, while Datuk Nik Mohd Nadzri Nik Zawawi has been appointed as the new Information Chief. Datuk Harun Durabi will serve as the Assistant Secretary.
The party is expected to finalize and announce the official candidates closer to the nomination date after a final review by the UMNO Supreme Council.
