Malaysia Records RM800 Million in Savings Following BUDI95 Targeted Subsidy Implementation

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – The Malaysian government has successfully recouped RM800 million in fiscal savings since the rollout of the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) targeted subsidy program on September 30, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Efficiency and Leakage Control

The Prime Minister, who also serves as the Finance Minister, attributed the substantial savings to a more precise distribution mechanism. By restricting subsidized fuel to eligible citizens, the government has effectively plugged leakages that previously benefited over 3.5 million foreign nationals and curbed the illegal smuggling of tens of thousands of liters of fuel across borders.

In a recent social media statement, Anwar emphasized that the shift from blanket subsidies to a targeted approach ensures that national wealth is preserved for the people.

Reinvesting in Public Welfare

The Prime Minister assured the public that the recovered funds are being channeled back into the economy to improve the quality of life for Malaysians. Key areas of reinvestment include:

  • Direct Cash Assistance: Strengthening programs such as Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA).
  • Public Healthcare: Funding the upgrades of aging clinics and hospitals.
  • Infrastructure: Improving road networks and strengthening national basic facilities.

The BUDI95 Framework

Under the BUDI95 initiative, Malaysian citizens aged 16 and above with a valid driving license are eligible for subsidized RON95 petrol. Eligible users can purchase up to 300 liters per month at a capped price of RM1.99 per liter, significantly lower than the market rate of RM2.60 per liter.

Anwar noted that while the transition to targeted subsidies had been debated for over two decades by previous administrations, the current MADANI Government exercised the necessary political will to implement the reform to ensure long-term economic sustainability.
