ARAU, El Sky News – PAS has dismissed allegations that its decision to abstain from the newly formed Perlis State Executive Council (Exco) constitutes a “sabotage” of the state government or an act of “treason” against the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.
The party’s leadership clarified that the move is a strategic realignment within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition following the appointment of the new Menteri Besar, Abu Bakar Hamzah.
Solidarity Within the Coalition
Speaking on the matter, PAS Central Committee member Ir. Ts. Khairil Nizam Khirudin emphasized that the party remains a staunch supporter of the current administration. He explained that by allowing BERSATU assemblymen to fill the Exco roles, PAS is demonstrating solidarity and providing the new Menteri Besar with the space to form his own team.
“There is no question of sabotage or disobedience. PAS is fully committed to the Perikatan Nasional mandate given by the people of Perlis,” Khairil Nizam stated. He added that the minimum legal requirement for the state council has been met, ensuring the government remains functional and stable.
Background of the Leadership Shift
The political transition in Perlis began following the resignation of former Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, who stepped down on December 25, 2025, citing health reasons. Abu Bakar Hamzah, from BERSATU, was subsequently sworn in as his successor.
The absence of PAS representatives in the new cabinet lineup initially sparked rumors of a rift between the two coalition partners. However, PAS leaders maintain that their role will now focus on providing “check and balance” from within the government ranks while supporting state policies.
Call for Stability
The clarification follows a recent decree from the Raja of Perlis, who urged all political factions to cease internal bickering and prioritize the state’s economic development and the welfare of its citizens.
By refuting the claims of treason, PAS aims to de-escalate tensions and reassure the public that the PN-led government remains intact and focused on governance rather than political maneuvering.
