Heavy Metal Presence Identified as Cause of Sungai Perak’s Blue Discoloration

KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has revealed that the unusual blue tint observed in parts of Sungai Perak is attributed to the presence of heavy metals and chemical compounds.

The phenomenon, which recently went viral and sparked public concern, has been linked to upstream activities and the natural geological composition of the Hulu Perak region.

Mining Activities Under Scrutiny

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, stated that preliminary investigations by a dedicated task force suggest the discoloration is influenced by mining operations in the surrounding areas. This includes activities related to Non-Radioactive Rare Earth Elements (NR-REE).

“Initial observations indicate that the change in water color is highly likely due to the presence of heavy metals or specific chemicals. We are currently monitoring the situation closely to determine if these elements exceed safe levels,” the Minister explained during a recent session.

Geological and Weather Factors

Experts also pointed out that the Hulu Perak district is naturally rich in minerals such as copper, tin, and arsenic. Significant rainfall can wash these minerals into the river system. When certain minerals, such as copper sulfate, dissolve in water, they can create a vivid blue or turquoise hue due to light refraction.

Similar incidents were reported in the same area in 2018, often following periods of heavy rain that triggered an influx of mineral deposits from the highlands.

Strict Enforcement and Monitoring

In response to the situation, the government has mobilized a special task force comprising the Department of Environment (DOE), the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG), and state authorities.

Key actions being taken include:

  • Regular Sampling: Water samples are being collected from affected sites, including the Kampung Sungai Papan Bridge, to test for hazardous substances like arsenic.
  • Operational Halt: The Perak state government has warned that any mining operators found to be the source of pollution or failing to comply with environmental regulations will be ordered to cease operations immediately.

Authorities have advised the local community to remain cautious and avoid using the river water for daily consumption until the comprehensive laboratory results confirm it is safe for public use. (Kayla Shabirah)
