Malaysia Optimistic on Preparations to Host 2027 ASEAN Para Games

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, El Sky News – Malaysia is officially on track and fully prepared to shoulder the responsibilities of hosting the 2027 ASEAN Para Games (APG). The statement was made by Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, following a series of strategic assessments and high-level meetings.

International Endorsement

The Minister’s confidence is echoed by the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF) leadership. Following a recent meeting with the governing body, Dr. Taufiq revealed that the APSF has provided a positive evaluation of Malaysia’s roadmap.

“The feedback from APSF was highly encouraging. They have acknowledged that Malaysia is moving in the right direction and is technically prepared to host the 14th edition of the games in 2027,” Dr. Taufiq told reporters during a performance review of the national contingent at the 2025 APG.

Infrastructure and Athlete Welfare

To ensure world-class standards, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has announced a RM5 million allocation to upgrade the Paralympic Sports Excellence Centre in Kampung Pandan. This project, slated to begin this year, aims to provide para-athletes with enhanced full-time training facilities and better comfort.

Beyond infrastructure, the Minister emphasized a holistic approach to hosting, which includes:

  • Venue Readiness: Rigorous audits of sports facilities to ensure accessibility.
  • Event Management: Detailed planning for the opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Classification Integrity: A commitment to handling sensitive athlete classification issues with transparency and professionalism.

Success as a Catalyst

The momentum for 2027 is bolstered by Malaysia’s stellar performance in the 2025 Thailand games, where the national contingent exceeded medal targets. Dr. Taufiq attributed this success to a long-term synergy between the National Sports Council (MSN), the National Sports Institute (ISN), and the dedicated coaching staff.

To maintain this morale, the government confirmed that high-achieving athletes will receive incentives under the Malaysia Athletes Victory Prize Scheme (SHAKAM), reinforcing the state’s commitment to athlete welfare and elite performance.
