Beijing Shaken: Top Chinese General Under Investigation for Leaking Nuclear Secrets to the U.S.

BEIJING – The international military community is reeling following reports that one of China’s most powerful military figures, General Zhang Youxia, has been placed under investigation. The Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) is allegedly involved in a high-stakes espionage scandal involving the disclosure of core nuclear weapon secrets to the United States—an act being described as the most significant betrayal in the modern history of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

A Fracture in Xi Jinping’s Inner Circle

General Zhang Youxia (75), long considered a staunch ally and a childhood friend of President Xi Jinping, is now under the microscope of the party’s disciplinary watchdogs. This investigation marks a dramatic turning point, as Zhang is a decorated war veteran who held the highest operational command over China’s armed forces.

Reports suggest that General Liu Zhenli, the Chief of the Joint Staff Department, has also been drawn into the widening probe.

Allegations of Espionage and Massive Corruption

According to internal sources cited by international media, the investigation into Zhang covers three critical areas that threaten national stability:

  • Strategic Data Leak: Zhang is accused of handing over core technical specifications of China’s nuclear arsenal to U.S. intelligence. If confirmed, this breach would grant Washington an unprecedented strategic advantage.
  • Procurement Corruption: The probe is also examining bribery within military equipment procurement processes during his tenure, including “pay-for-play” schemes regarding the promotion of high-ranking officers.
  • Political Disloyalty: Zhang is alleged to have formed an independent military faction outside of party oversight, viewed as a direct challenge to Xi Jinping’s absolute authority.

Impact on the Chinese Military

This scandal represents the climax of a massive “purge” within the PLA Rocket Force—the unit responsible for China’s nuclear missiles—which has been ongoing since 2023. Zhang’s downfall is viewed as a political “earthquake” because he symbolized the traditional military authority of the People’s Liberation Army.

Security analysts believe this crackdown reveals Xi Jinping’s deep-seated mistrust of his own military elite, occurring at a time of heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.

Beijing’s Response

To date, the Chinese Ministry of Defense has issued only brief statements regarding “serious violations of discipline and law,” without explicitly detailing the leaks to foreign powers. However, Zhang’s absence from recent high-profile state events strongly indicates that he has been stripped of his power. ( Rahul Rezky )
