Firefighting Aircraft Deployed as Peatland Fire Ravages 100 Hectares in Pengerang

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department’s (JBPM) Air Unit has initiated “water bombing” operations today to combat a massive peatland fire that has consumed nearly 100 hectares of land in Taman Bayu Damai.

The aerial operation focuses on Jalan Sungai Kapal, where dry weather and strong winds have caused the blaze to spread rapidly since it first broke out last Friday.

Aerial Tactics and Assets

To tackle the blaze, JBPM has deployed an MI-17-IV helicopter equipped with a Bambi Bucket, capable of carrying 1,590 liters of water per drop. The aerial team consists of two pilots and 13 specialized support crew members, including engineers and members of the Special Air Rescue Team (Paskub).

Beyond direct firefighting, the helicopter is being utilized to:

  • Create strategic fire breaks to prevent further spread.
  • Transport ground personnel to remote areas that are inaccessible by land vehicles.
  • Monitor smoke patterns and fire hotspots from the air.

Current Progress and Challenges

As of Tuesday night, firefighting teams have successfully contained approximately 50 percent of the affected area (roughly 49.8 hectares out of 99.55 hectares). However, crews on the ground continue to face significant obstacles, including a lack of nearby water sources and difficult terrain that hinders heavy machinery.

Displacement of Residents

The environmental impact has been severe, with thick smoke blanketing nearby residential areas. The resulting haze has led to respiratory concerns and limited visibility for locals.

To ensure public safety, authorities have evacuated 153 residents from 50 families. They are currently being housed at two Temporary Evacuation Centers (PPS): the Taman Bayu Damai Multipurpose Hall and SK Sungai Kapal.

Inter-Agency Coordination

The operation is a multi-agency effort involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Pengerang Municipal Council, and the Department of Environment (DOE). While the damage to the peatland is extensive, officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have been reported thus far.
