Nearly 30 Malaysians Rescued from Cambodian Cybercrime Centers Return Home

KUALA LUMPUR – Nearly 30 Malaysian citizens suspected of being victims of online scam syndicates in Cambodia have been successfully rescued and repatriated this month.

The repatriation comes as Cambodian authorities intensify their nationwide crackdown on illegal online gambling and cyber-fraud operations, which have notoriously targeted young job seekers from Southeast and South Asia.

Collaborative Rescue Efforts According to reports, the Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh worked closely with Cambodian immigration authorities to facilitate the rescue. The victims had reportedly been lured to the country with promises of high-paying jobs, only to find themselves trapped in “scam compounds” and forced to work under duress.

“The security authorities in Cambodia are continuing to ramp up operations against online fraud syndicates that have deceived thousands,” a representative noted. This latest group of survivors underwent immigration processing at the Phnom Penh International Airport before being cleared for their flight back to Malaysia.

A Growing Regional Crisis Since July last year, Cambodia has significantly stepped up its enforcement actions, leading to the deportation of over 3,000 foreign suspects from various nations. Many of these individuals were originally recruited through deceptive advertisements on social media for positions in casinos or administrative offices.

The Malaysian government, through Wisma Putra and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), has repeatedly warned citizens to be cautious of “too good to be true” job offers abroad.

Ongoing Assistance While dozens have returned safely this month, the Malaysian Embassy remains in active communication with local authorities to identify and assist any remaining citizens who may still be held in illegal centers, particularly in Sihanoukville and other border regions.

Returning victims are expected to undergo debriefing sessions with Malaysian authorities to assist in tracking the recruitment networks operating within Malaysia that facilitate these syndicates.
