Kuala Lumpur, El Sky News Indonesia is strengthening its efforts to achieve space independence by advancing plans to develop a national spaceport in Biak, Papua. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) considers Biak a strategic location due to its proximity to the equator, which allows for more efficient rocket and satellite launches into low Earth orbit.
The spaceport project is not only intended to support research and technological development but is also expected to enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global space industry and stimulate economic growth in eastern Indonesia.
In line with these plans, Russia has expressed its readiness to assist Indonesia in developing space infrastructure and technology. The Russian government has opened the door to technical cooperation, including support for rocket launch facilities and systems related to a national space station.
This potential collaboration builds on existing bilateral ties between Indonesia and Russia in the field of space research and technology, particularly through cooperation between BRIN and Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos. Russia emphasized that any assistance provided would be for peaceful purposes and aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s space capabilities.
With international support and regulatory frameworks currently being prepared, Indonesia hopes the development of the national spaceport in Biak can be realized soon, marking a significant milestone in the country’s advancement in space technology.
