Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Dousing Former Girlfriend with Petrol

KUALA LUMPUR – A man was produced in the Magistrate’s Court today to face a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly doused his former girlfriend with petrol and attempted to set her on fire.

The accused pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before the presiding magistrate. According to the facts of the case, the incident occurred last week following a heated domestic dispute. It is alleged that the suspect confronted the victim at her workplace before committing the act.

The prosecution informed the court that the victim sustained injuries during the struggle but managed to escape before the situation escalated further. Bystanders who witnessed the incident intervened and detained the suspect until the police arrived at the scene.

“This is a serious offense involving an attempt on a human life. We are requesting that no bail be granted given the gravity of the situation and the safety of the victim,” the deputy public prosecutor stated during the proceedings.

The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to 20 years if convicted. The court has set a mention date for next month to allow for the submission of medical and forensic reports.

The suspect remains in custody pending the next court appearance.
