Flood Situation in Kinta Improves as Victim Numbers Decline

KUALA LUMPUR — The flood situation in the Kinta district has shown signs of significant improvement, with the number of displaced residents seeking shelter at local relief centers continuing to trend downward as of Wednesday morning.

According to the latest report released by the Perak State Disaster Management Secretariat at 8:00 AM, the total number of evacuees currently stands at 11 individuals from five separate families. This represents a notable decrease from the 26 victims involving 10 families recorded just 24 hours prior, indicating that many residents have been able to return to their homes to begin cleanup operations.

The remaining victims, all of whom hail from the flood-prone areas of Kampung Manjoi and Kampung Tengku Hussein, are currently being housed at the Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Tengku Hussein Manjoi. This temporary relief center (PPS) remains fully operational to provide food, medical assessment, and basic necessities to those still unable to return to their residences.

The decline in numbers follows a swift response from the federal government, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously extending direct aid to those affected in the Manjoi area to alleviate the financial burden caused by the flash floods.

While the situation in Kinta is stabilizing, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has cautioned that the danger is not entirely over for the state of Perak. Two major rivers in the Hilir Perak and Muallim districts have reached critical “danger” thresholds, raising concerns for downstream communities.

As of this morning:

  • Sungai Bidor in Changkat Jong has been recorded at a height of 3.95 meters.
  • Sungai Slim in Slim River has reached a level of 25.46 meters.

Authorities are monitoring these water levels closely, as any further heavy rainfall upstream could trigger a second wave of flooding in surrounding villages.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather outlook forecasting continued rainfall throughout the morning across several key districts in Perak. The affected areas include Kinta, Kampar, Kuala Kangsar, Hulu Perak, Manjung, Larut, Matang, and Selama.

Given the saturated ground and the high river levels, the State Disaster Management Secretariat has advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone zones to remain vigilant. Emergency responders from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and other agencies remain on high alert to facilitate evacuations should water levels rise unexpectedly.

Residents are urged to follow the instructions of local authorities and stay updated via official channels as the monsoon season continues to impact the region.
