Siti Nurhaliza Addresses Prayer Attire Controversy with Grace and Silence

KUALA LUMPUR – National songbird Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza has chosen to take the high road following a viral debate regarding her performing prayers without a telekung (traditional prayer veil). The iconic singer stated that she does not wish to prolong the issue, as religious experts have already stepped in to clarify the matter.

The discussion began after photos circulated online showing the 47-year-old artist performing her prayers in a modest jubah (robe) following an Iftar event. While some netizens questioned the absence of the traditional white veil, many others and religious scholars have come to her defense.

Seeking Growth and Patience

Speaking to Gempak, Siti Nurhaliza expressed that as a Muslim, she is continuously in a process of self-improvement and perfecting her religious practices. She emphasized that she prefers to stay silent to avoid any further misinterpretation of her words.

“For me, regarding matters of worship, I don’t feel the need to reply because religious scholars have already explained it. I am still improving myself and my deeds. I hope Allah gives me strength and patience, as it is not easy being an artist in a challenging world where everything you do becomes a focus,” she said.

Normalizing Social Media Discourse

Despite the scrutiny, the Anta Permana singer remains unfazed by the online chatter, viewing it as a common trend in the digital age. She noted that during the holy month of Ramadan, it is better to maintain positive thoughts (husnuzon).

“In the era of social media, everyone likes to give their opinion. That is normal. As long as it doesn’t turn into slander, I have no problem with it. Sometimes, when people criticize, it can be a reminder for us to reduce our mistakes,” she added.

Expert Verdict: Prayers are Valid

The debate also caught the attention of religious experts, including Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Izhar Ariff Mohd. Kashim, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

He clarified that Siti’s prayers were legally valid according to Islamic law. He explained that the primary requirement for a woman’s prayer is to cover the aurat (modesty) completely. While the telekung is a cultural norm and tradition in the Malay Archipelago, it is not a mandatory religious requirement as long as the attire worn is loose, clean, and covers the body appropriately.

Siti Nurhaliza concluded by advising the public to be mindful of their comments on social media, warning that writing things that lead to slander can result in unintended sins.
