Trump Signals Openness to Iran Talks as Pakistan Prepares Mediation Amid Escalating Middle East War

Kuala Lumpur – Donald Trump has described Iran’s current leadership as “very reasonable,” raising cautious optimism for potential diplomatic talks as Pakistan prepares to host negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump revealed that the United States and Iran have been engaging both directly and indirectly. He expressed confidence that a deal could be reached, although he acknowledged uncertainty remains.

The diplomatic momentum comes as Pakistan positions itself as a mediator, announcing plans to host “meaningful talks” between Washington and Tehran in the coming days. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the country’s willingness to facilitate a comprehensive and lasting resolution.

The conflict, which began with an Israeli strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has since expanded across the region. His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, now leads a government that Trump claims appears more open to negotiation.

However, tensions remain high. Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, have warned that Tehran will not accept any form of pressure or humiliation, especially as the United States continues to deploy additional troops to the region.

Meanwhile, Israel has intensified its military campaign, launching over 140 airstrikes targeting Iranian missile facilities and infrastructure. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks, some of which have impacted key locations, including Mehrabad Airport and areas near Beersheba.

The conflict has also severely disrupted global energy markets. Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—a critical route for nearly 20% of global oil shipments—has pushed oil prices sharply higher, increasing fears of global inflation and economic slowdown.

Adding to the complexity, Yemen’s Houthi forces have entered the conflict, raising concerns about further disruption to global shipping routes, particularly the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Despite rising military activity, diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan offer a potential path toward de-escalation. However, with continued troop deployments and ongoing strikes, the situation remains volatile and uncertain.
