Political Cooperation Now Essential, Malay Interests Must Remain Priority

KUALA LUMPUR, May, 2026 — Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has declared that political cooperation in Malaysia is now no longer optional, urging leaders to embrace collaboration while safeguarding core national principles and Malay interests.

Speaking at the 80th anniversary celebration of United Malays National Organisation (Umno), Zahid emphasized that cooperation among political parties must be guided by clear values and long-term vision.

Shift from Confrontation to Collaboration

Zahid called for a transformation in Malaysia’s political approach — moving away from confrontation toward cooperation — to ensure stability in the country’s evolving political landscape.

He stressed that such cooperation should not be based on convenience alone, but grounded in:

  • Strong principles
  • Respect for the Federal Constitution
  • Preservation of the nation’s social contract

“Political cooperation is now essential,” he said, highlighting the need for maturity and wisdom in governance.

Malay Interests Remain Central

Despite advocating broader political collaboration, Zahid reiterated that Malay interests must remain a priority, alongside respect for the rights of other communities.

He noted that:

  • Islam should remain a central pillar
  • The rights of all races must be acknowledged
  • National unity must be preserved through balanced leadership

This reflects Umno’s longstanding role in representing Malay interests while operating within Malaysia’s multiracial framework.

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Zahid outlined a long-term vision for Malaysia and the Malay community over the next two decades. His goals include:

  • Strengthening faith and identity
  • Restoring political stability
  • Developing talent and future skills
  • Embracing technology and knowledge-driven growth

He also emphasized the importance of preparing younger generations to lead with strong values and a clear sense of purpose.

Umno’s Role Beyond Elections

Zahid highlighted that Umno’s mission goes beyond winning elections. Instead, the party must:

  • Strengthen internal unity
  • Build a solid foundation for future leadership
  • Shape national direction in economic and cultural development

He concluded by stressing that leadership may change, but the party’s core principles must remain strong as it approaches its centenary milestone
