Validity Period for Umrah Visa Shortened, Pilgrims Urged to Plan Ahead

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Malaysian Umrah pilgrims are now advised to plan their travel itineraries more carefully following a significant policy change announced by the Saudi Arabian government regarding the validity period of Umrah visas.

The pre-departure validity of the Umrah visa has been drastically shortened from three (3) months to just one (1) month (30 days). The change takes immediate effect and directly impacts visa registration and flight scheduling processes.

Must Depart Within 30 Days

Under the new rule, pilgrims whose Umrah visas have been approved must ensure that their departure to the Holy Land takes place within 30 calendar days from the date the visa is issued.

If a pilgrim fails to depart within the stipulated timeframe, the visa will be automatically cancelled by the Saudi system, requiring a fresh application and potentially incurring additional costs, including flight ticket changes.

“This change demands closer coordination between pilgrims, travel agencies, and visa issuers. There is no longer room for schedule flexibility,” said a local travel industry representative.

What Does This Mean for Malaysian Pilgrims?

No More Last-Minute Registrations: Travel agencies are expected to avoid processing visas too early, while pilgrims are also advised not to register at the very last minute. Ideally, early registration should be followed by visa processing one to two weeks before the confirmed travel date.

Tighter Travel Timelines: Pilgrims must adhere strictly to their confirmed flight dates. Unexpected delays — including health or personal emergencies — that extend beyond the 30-day period may result in visa cancellation.

Verify With Agencies: Pilgrims are strongly encouraged to stay in close communication with their Umrah operators and verify the exact visa issuance date to avoid confusion regarding the departure deadline.

The new regulation is seen as part of Saudi Arabia’s effort to improve transparency, streamline administrative processes, and better manage the flow of Umrah pilgrims globally.
