Geely Unveils Groundbreaking 90-Degree Independent Wheel Steering Technology

HANGZHOU, El Sky News – Chinese automotive giant Geely has demonstrated a revolutionary step in vehicle maneuverability, showcasing a prototype electric crossover, the EX5, equipped with an advanced four-wheel independent steering system capable of enabling the car to execute a perfect 90-degree turn-in-place rotation.

Innovative In-Wheel Motor Architecture

The core of this breakthrough lies in Geely’s proprietary in-wheel motor architecture. Unlike conventional setups, this system integrates an electric drive unit directly into each of the four wheels, granting unprecedented levels of individual control over both power and steering angle.

The demonstration highlighted the EX5’s ability to achieve:

  • Zero-Radius Turning: The car can rotate 360 degrees on its own axis, effectively eliminating the need for complex multi-point turns in tight spaces.
  • Lateral Movement (Crab Driving): The system allows the vehicle to drive sideways, dramatically simplifying parallel parking.
  • Precision Maneuvering: Enhanced agility for navigating extremely confined urban environments.

The Future of Urban Mobility

According to Geely engineers, this omnidirectional capability marks a significant shift in urban mobility design. The current prototype system showcased external control via a specialized glove, though the company confirms future iterations will integrate control functionality through widely available devices such as smartphones and smartwatches.

“This technology is not just about showing off; it’s about fundamentally rethinking how cars interact with dense urban infrastructure,” stated a Geely spokesperson during the recent demonstration event. “The ability to virtually shrink the vehicle’s turning circle to zero is a game-changer for parking and traffic flow.”

Market Implications and Development

While the system is currently demonstrated on the EX5 prototype, it shares conceptual similarities with other advanced maneuvering technologies, like Hyundai Mobis’s e-Corner. However, Geely’s development is expected to be integrated into its future premium electric vehicle lineups.

Challenges remain in optimizing the design for mass production, notably the requirement for enlarged wheel arches observed on the prototype to accommodate the extreme 90-degree steering angle, which may impact interior space. Nevertheless, Geely’s successful demonstration firmly positions them at the forefront of electric vehicle chassis and control system innovation.
