Iran Expands Space Footprint with Launch of Three Domestically-Built Satellites

TEHRAN, El Sky News – In a significant boost to its private space sector, Iran successfully deployed three home-grown satellites into orbit on Sunday. The mission was carried out in collaboration with the Russian space agency, utilizing a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in eastern Russia.

Mission Details and Technical Capabilities

The three satellites—identified as Zafar-2, Paya, and Kowsar-1.5—were released into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of approximately 500 kilometers. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the Russian Roscosmos corporation confirmed that the launch proceeded as planned, with all three payloads reaching their designated orbits shortly after liftoff at 4:48 PM Tehran time.

Vahid Yazdanian, the Deputy Minister of Communications and head of the Iran Space Research Institute, highlighted that these satellites represent a milestone for the country’s private industry. The hardware is designed for Earth observation, featuring imaging capabilities with resolutions ranging from 15 meters to as precise as under five meters.

Strategic Objectives for Civil Use

The data harvested from this mission is intended strictly for civilian and developmental purposes. Key applications include:

  • Precision Agriculture: Monitoring crop health and land use.
  • Resource Management: Tracking water levels and managing national water resources.
  • Environmental Protection: Observing ecological changes and natural disaster monitoring.

A Growing Partnership

This launch underscores the deepening technical cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in the field of aerospace. By utilizing Russian launch facilities and heavy-lift vehicles like the Soyuz, Iran continues to bridge the gap in its orbital delivery capabilities while focusing its domestic efforts on the manufacturing of sophisticated satellite hardware.

The successful deployment of Zafar-2, Paya, and Kowsar-1.5 marks a new chapter in Iran’s ambition to integrate satellite data into its national infrastructure and economy.
