Late VAR Drama Denies Manchester United as Wolves Secure Rare Point at Old Trafford

MANCHESTER, El Sky News – Manchester United concluded their 2025 campaign on a disappointing note as they were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Early Lead Frittered Away

The Red Devils appeared to be on course for a routine victory when Joshua Zirkzee broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. The Dutch forward’s strike took a fortunate deflection before finding the back of the net, giving the home side a deserved lead.

However, United’s defensive frailties were exposed shortly before the interval. Wolves, who have struggled for goals all season, found an equalizer through Ladislav Krejci, whose powerful header silenced the Stretford End and sent the teams into the break level.

Goalkeeping Heroics and VAR Heartbreak

The second half turned into a battle of the shot-stoppers. Wolves’ keeper Jose Sa produced a stunning instinctive save to prevent teammate Yerson Mosquera from scoring an own goal. At the other end, United’s Senne Lammens kept his side in the game with a double save to deny both Krejci and Mosquera in quick succession.

The drama peaked in the 90th minute when Patrick Dorgu thought he had snatched a late winner for Manchester United. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside, ensuring the visitors escaped with a point.

Implications for the Table

The result is a significant blow to Manchester United’s aspirations, leaving them static in sixth place with 30 points. For Wolves, despite remaining rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, the draw provides a glimmer of hope as they claim only their third point of a grueling 19-match campaign.

United now heads into 2026 facing growing pressure to find consistency, while Wolves will look to use this hard-fought draw as a turning point for the second half of the season.
