TOMOHON, El Sky News — A student from Universitas Negeri Manado (UNIMA), identified as EMM (21), was found dead by hanging in her boarding room in Matani Satu, Tomohon Tengah, North Sulawesi on Tuesday morning, 30 December 2025. Authorities suspect she suffered from severe depression following alleged sexual harassment by a university lecturer.
Prior to her death, EMM wrote a handwritten letter that has circulated widely on social media, addressed to the university regarding the alleged misconduct of lecturer DM. The letter contains her heartfelt account of trauma and distress, which has deeply moved the public.
The university confirmed receiving a report of alleged sexual harassment via the Higher Education Violence Prevention Task Force on 19 December 2025 and is currently following internal procedures. UNIMA Rector Prof. Joseph Kambey has temporarily suspended the lecturer in question as an immediate response.
The family has also reported the case to North Sulawesi Regional Police (Polda Sulut) for further legal investigation. Authorities are examining evidence and the timeline surrounding the tragedy. The incident has sparked strong public reactions, including a statement from Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, calling it a “serious crime” and urging a fair and transparent legal process.
