North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles as U.S. Signals Major Defense Strategy Shift

PYONGYANG / SEOUL,El Sky News – Tensions on the Korean Peninsula escalated on Wednesday after North Korea launched a series of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea. The provocation comes amid strong signals from Washington that the United States is overhauling its alliance strategy, potentially forcing South Korea to take a more independent stance in countering nuclear threats.

Tactical Provocation: A Message from Pyongyang

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that several missiles were fired from the vicinity of Pyongyang at approximately 3:50 PM local time. The projectiles traveled roughly 350 kilometers at a peak altitude of 80 km before landing outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Analysts believe the timing is no coincidence. The launch occurred during a high-profile visit by U.S. defense officials to Seoul and follows a period of heightened anxiety within the Kim Jong-un regime, reportedly triggered by recent U.S. special operations abroad, including the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.

The Great Shift: Toward South Korean “Self-Reliance”

At the heart of the current diplomatic tension is a new Pentagon policy document hinting at a fundamental shift in the U.S. defense posture. Key pillars of this shift include:

  • Primary Responsibility: Washington is increasingly pushing for Seoul to take the “lead role” in its own conventional and regional defense.
  • Limited U.S. Role: The U.S. has signaled a transition toward providing “critical but limited” support, prioritizing the protection of the U.S. Homeland over maintaining a massive permanent footprint on the Peninsula.
  • From Denuclearization to Management: Notably, recent reports suggest the U.S. is moving away from the explicit goal of “complete denuclearization,” focusing instead on “risk management” of North Korea’s existing nuclear capabilities.

Regional Response and Escalation

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung condemned the launches as a violation of UN resolutions but also used the moment to emphasize the necessity of “defense sovereignty” for South Korea. Meanwhile, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi called the launches “absolutely intolerable” and a direct threat to regional peace.

Experts warn that this “U.S. retreat” from its traditional role as the region’s primary security guarantor may trigger a new arms race, with Seoul potentially considering its own nuclear deterrent to balance Pyongyang’s growing arsenal. ( Rahul Rezky )
