Kuala Lumpur — Greece has been ranked as the best country in the world to retire in 2026, according to the latest Global Retirement Index highlighted by CNN and compiled by the international lifestyle publication International Living.
The annual ranking evaluates countries based on key factors important to retirees, including cost of living, healthcare quality, climate, housing affordability, and overall lifestyle. Greece topped the list for the first time, surpassing traditional favorites such as Portugal and Spain.
Experts say Greece’s combination of Mediterranean climate, scenic coastline, affordable housing, and accessible healthcare made it particularly attractive for retirees seeking both quality of life and lower living costs.
The country is also known for its thousands of islands, historic cities, and relaxed lifestyle, factors that have increasingly drawn retirees from Europe and North America looking to spend their later years abroad.
Other countries frequently appearing in the top retirement rankings include Costa Rica and Panama, both popular for their retiree-friendly visa programs and relatively low cost of living.
Meanwhile, European destinations such as Italy and France also remain attractive options due to their cultural heritage, healthcare systems, and lifestyle benefits.
Analysts say the growing trend of retiring abroad reflects shifting priorities among retirees, who are increasingly seeking destinations that offer better affordability, warmer climates, and improved overall wellbeing.
With rising living costs in many developed countries, experts expect international retirement migration to continue growing over the next decade.
